Nate

We’ve spent the day lazing around my villa. We have gone for a swim and had a late lunch. We walked along the beach. Each time I have wanted to bring up Harris and what happened in New York, but I never wanted to spoil the moments we were sharing. But deep down, it’s killing me.

Jackson told me he sent some guys around to Harris’ place, didn’t touch him, but most certainly warned him that the skeletons in his closet will most definitely reappear if he comes anywhere near Camryn again. Apparently, that didn’t go over too well, which I’m not surprised because Harris has the ego the size of Manhattan.

“You okay?” Camryn asks, pulling me from my thoughts.

“Yeah,” I answer while wrapping my arms around her tighter. We’re currently lying outside by the pool with a nice bottle of red wine looking up at the stars. Millions of tiny shiny dots scatter the sky in their heavenly finery.

“You seem tense.” Those jungle green eyes are sparkling with concern.

“I was thinking about Harris.”

These words have Camryn sitting up and turning herself toward me. “Harris?”

“I can’t stop thinking about what he did to you.” My hand tightens around the wine glass stem. Camryn is silent for a moment while she assesses my words. Me? I am working out what her next words might be.

“He scared me,” she says quietly. “I never thought he would go that far.” She takes my hand in hers as if I am giving her the strength to continue. She entwines our fingers. “He brought me back to a time I want to forget…” She pauses for a moment taking a deep breath. “The night Vanessa was attacked, and all I could think about was is this going to happen to me?” Tears begin to slide down her cheeks.

“I will never let Harris Edwards near you again.” My voice steels with anger.

“This isn’t your fight, Nate.”

Like hell, it isn’t! Anger bubbles to the surface, and I can’t help but let it pour out of me. “I protect my friends, Camryn.”

“You hardly know me, Nate.”

Her words hit me like a punch to the gut. Know her? What does she mean by that? I’ve spent every single night for the past couple of months on the phone with her, talking about anything and everything. How is that not knowing her?

“I know you, Camryn.” Looking at her directly, she turns her head away from my intense glare. Lifting my finger under her chin, I turn her attention back to me. “I know you, Camryn,” I repeat my statement for clarity.

“Nate…” The vulnerability on her face makes me think of her as someone who’s exposed and defenseless.

“I’ve got you, Camryn.” I need her to know that whatever’s between us, no matter what, I have her back.

She leans forward and wraps her arms around my neck and hugs me tightly. Camryn begins to cry, which I know for someone as strong as Camryn, makes her feel vulnerable.

“I’ve got you,” I tell her once more.
